Coins coming out of a jar

Rutland County Council receives just £501.31 per household in central government grant. That's less than half the national average of £1019.02 . That means local council tax payers pay more council tax than in many other areas. Harborough and South Kestevan Councils are also suffering from Conservative government cuts.

FIGHTING FOR A BETTER DEAL

The new Liberal Democrat-run councils are pledged to fight for a better deal for local council tax payers. They want to see a fairer financial deal for our local councils to protect local services. Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Dr. James Moore is calling for change. "The Conservatives have taken our area for granted for too long. They cut the central grants to rural communities and then expect us to pay more and more council tax every year, " he said.

LIB DEMS RUNNING COUNCILS

The Liberal Democrat successes in the last local elections mean there area fresh faces in local government across the area. Liberal Democrat Stephen Lambert became one of the youngest councillors in the area, when he snatched a Conservative seat in Uppingham. Oakham also swung to the Liberal Democrats, Rutland County Council now has 11 Liberal Democrats, 6 Conservatives and just 2 Labour. The Liberal Democrats also run Harborough council and are part of the coalition leadership of South Kestevan.
